Do we really need to spend $300 million for electric green cars, what happens when the power goes out?

http://www.nypost.com/seven/02112009/news/politics/congress_hopping_carts_154496.htm

The federal government is preparing to spend millions to purchase a fleet of small electric vehicles that critics compare to golf carts.

The 8 billion economic stimulus bill that passed the Senate yesterday contains 0 million for the government to purchase a fleet of "green" cars.

Yes,,, as long as it is funded with government money, and the work is done by big labor union employees.

Because more government, and more labor union, means more democrats.

Just ask any federal, or state, or union worker, which party they vote for.

When the power goes out, Obama will hire thousands of federal employees, to manually turn the generators to keep the power on.

You use the non-electric cars, I guess.

    Next . . .

I wonder, though, what will happen a few years from now when technology has advanced to the point that all cars are electric. Guss you’ll have to have standby generators to fuel your cars during prolonged outages. Not a biggie, a standby generator costs only a few hundred dollars.

I tend to doubt reports in the Post. Its more likely spin than fact. I don’t as a rule have a problem with investing the green technologies. I don’t see how else it will move forward.

Hmmm… Stimulating the economy by buying American electric cars….

I don’t actually have a problem with this.

Not only that but, who is going to buy them? I can’t fit 5 kids in a golf cart!! This whole stimulus bill is a joke. They accused Bush of "the politics of fear" Obama wants us to believe the sky is falling. I’m not buying any of it.

Well for the fellow one her who agrees with Global warming must not live her in Wisconsin where we had quite a frigid winter this year. Electric cars are a dumb a@@ idea and no one wants to drive one, how fast could it go, not fast enough.

IREPS. But not for the government nor their flies. Learn better how to protect your trade secrets.

We as individuals should not self rule, however becoming more self disciplined and conservative wouldn’t be a bad idea.

No we do not. Even when the facts state that green cars are a good idea, and could help there is a flip side Mr. husien obama is not saying.
All these so called green cars cost so much money to make that the car company’s will have to charge a huge price in order to make them. Most hard working American’s can’t afford to buy a new car at the cost of them now much less if the price goes up more. Simply put this is a huge waste of tax dollars.
Mr. husien obama needs to explain to the working people of this country just why at this time in our country’s hard times just why should we pay for the car company’s to make green cars that will cost so much we the people can’t afford to buy.

The power doesn’t go out forever. Electric cars are the way of the future so why not start using them somewhere. People will have jobs building them and it will be good for the environment.

What happens when the power goes out?

The that means oil, natural gas and coal has all been used up.

Give it a few hundred years.

Assuming we have been dumb enough not to go to alternative energies way before that.

    Peace
    Jim

Yes. The basic research in technology, the money for start-up companies and retooling for some of the existing companies, the reduction in mobile source emissions and the effect this could have on public health not to mention reduced greenhouse gases, and the many many new technologies that result from such research will help the economy now and in the long run. Many more economic sectors will be nvolved that just the three major US automakers (which have gotten some money already and could also get some of this).

It is much more useful than sending 20 billion per month to Iraq. It helps the American people much more.

I’m upset about cutting money for education and health care projects. This helps Americans now and definitely helps with long term economic stability.

I agree it is a lot of money (800 billion) on top of what has already been allocated (~ 800 billion fr Wall Street and AIG and the big 3 Automakers). But this goes to the small businesses through needed projects that will stimulate more than just the banking sector and the big 3). We need to cut taxes (at least on the bottom income earners if we can’t cut for everybody), but this also means we will need to inch them up again in latter years to pay down the debt unless the surpluses from these investments are so huge the debt can be paid down. If our new technologies are in demand world-wide, we may have more jobs and revenues to help offset our current investment in technology.

It’s all about what ‘feels’ right, not about what makes sense.

It appears common sense is no longer common.

power doesn’t just go out. The question is what powers the generator that supplies electricity to recharge the car?

Frankly I think electric cars suck.
