green homes?
I want to build a house that is energy efficient and wanted to know how I might build one that stands on its own.

i would research what they call "solar passive" homes. this is merely the building design taking advantage of your latitude and using the sun and surface area of the home to dramatically reduce your heating and cooling costs. you can also use high-grade insulation, solar panels and/or hydroelectricity, etc. to supplement your electricity needs (and lowering your bills). you can look into straw-bale homes (not as eccentric as the name implies) or "monolithic domes" (these are expensive but will last hundreds of years - they are fire proof, will not be destroyed in a hurricane or tornado, and can even be struck by lightning).

Check out the green home in Atlanta GA created by Southface Energy Institute. You will get great ideas from it.

the most important thing is good insulation, which can be achieved on any home.
