I have solar panels and a wind turbine and they are great, however the cost of buying, getting and paying for planning permission and having them fitted was very expensive and although there is no ongoing cost ( solar) I will not get my money back for what I've spent. The turbine; you have to pay a high fee to have it connected to the National Grid and they will buy any extra energy I don't use at a very tiny fee, while selling on at a high fee and if it is very windy you have to switch it off, so it isn't very efficient.
I would fit solar to any new build and make it cheaper and easier for planning permission for all other homes, this would at least help with energy bills. The Government grants available don't work, you have to buy from their approved list and those suppliers charge more because they have to pay to be on the list. It cost me 25% of the price by not having a grant and using a non approved company.

Solar and wind, just because they don't take a lot of energy to produce/harness, and take no money to run since they're taking advantage of what happens naturally. Maybe nuclear under the right circumstances.
