How do I get my school to go green?
This summer my friend and I really got into the whole going green thing. We have recycled even more, planted a tree, hugged trees (lol), and started doing those small things around the house. I love helping out with the environment and since school is starting I want my school to go green. How can I make this idea expand and work? I have thought of putting recycling bins outside and have small bins in classes. Also maybe turining off lights to conserve energy. Is it expensive to get solar panels for the school. My middle school did it, but i honestly do not know how. If you have any ideas to help me out that would be great.

Go to the class President and President of the Student Body and get them envolved. Have an assembly and invite someone to speak on this matter (why not ask Al Gore to come speak?) Get the student body educated and then break up into groups (perhaps by class) and each group would have to submit say 10 ideas. Then have a Committee for Energy and they would compile and present the most popular ideas to the faculty. Then the students would carry it out and help by reminding each other. Once you have this part completed, contact the local newspaper and see if they want to do a story on your school and your green efforts. Good luck to you all.

Have the turn off the a/c. 30 years ago schools didn’t have a/c.

It might help to organize an ecology club at your school ~ perhaps your science teacher or a parent could be an advisor. Your club can then come up with ideas that could be brought to the school board or the principal.
Some ideas won’t cost any money ~ such as composting yard clippings and leaves. Recycling is a little bit different since it will cost money to buy the bins and have them transported to the transfer station. It helps of course to have all that information before going before the principal. I’m attaching a link how we started a recycling program at our school to give you some ideas.
Students might also get in the habit of turning off bathroom lights when they leave, or turning off gym or library lights when the room isn’t in use.
You might also find community service projects that the school could participate in ~ such as erosion control, replanting trees, picking up trash along waterways and so forth. Your city Park and Recs, Bureau of Land Management, local office of the US Dept of Fish & Game, and US Forest Service can help there.

talk 2 your friends and see if they want to help. your teachers might,2 so talk to them about some of their(and your!) ideas.
putting a mini-recycling bin in each classroom would be easy. just write "paper, cans, bottles" on it and let some1 see u putting something in it. maybe they’ll spread the word!!!!
talk to your principal about having a fundraiser for your school where people plant trees or pick up trash around your town.
