The Capitol Power Plant, a 99-year-old facility that heats and cools the hallowed halls of Congress, still burns coal and accounts for one-third of the legislative branch’s greenhouse gas emissions. For a decade, lawmakers have attempted to clean it up.
In recent years, Congress has reduced its energy consumption. The steam and chilled-water power plant has become more efficient. It now burns more natural gas and only 35 percent coal, compared with 49 percent in 2007.
But Congress is running out of options to make the plant fully green. On Friday the House announced that it was abandoning its goal to be carbon neutral and would no longer buy offsets to make sure it was removing as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it releases. Those offsets were key to zeroing out the remaining emissions at the power plant that could not be reduced by other means.
So if Congress is abandoning its carbon swap program, how can it force business and you and I to do the same thing?

The tree huggers want everyone to drive around in electric cars, do they realize that they need to be plugged in to charge???
If generating energy causes green house gasses (just like al gores a*ss) where will the electric come from??
Not oil, that also causes warming (of al gores a*ss)
So does this mean that al gore can blow it out his a*ss or that we will all die from roasting and flooding??
So far the left does not like oil, coal, nuke, wind (just ask kennedy) water (might kill a fish) so where will it all come from???

Is this because of all of the high paying "green" jobs he’s going to create?
Is this because universal heatlhcare will save us soooooooo much money and prescriptions will be cheap too?
Is this because energy from windmills will be cheaper than from coal?
Is this because the poor and elderly will be so much better off when they pay carbon taxes?
Is this because hybrid cars cost less to run than gasoline cars?
Is this because "sharing the wealth" motivates everyone to work hard for each other?

The new energy bill does nothing to increase competition against oil and coal, instead protects these industries from competition while giving Wal-Mart a financial shot in the arm.
This bill does nothing to reduce green house gases. Oil and coal will still reign as kings of energy for many years to come.
If congress pushed nuclear power, then we could actually reduce ghg’s no matter how many incandescent light bulbs were used.
Instead congress places the burden on the user rather than the producer while at the same time not giving us the option to choose a cleaner burning source of power.
Which proves my point. Global warming is not about the reduction of ghg’s, as politicians will always need polluters so they can maintain a source of power.
The people will be the ones to feel the abuse of power from the politicians.
First it’s the light bulbs, then it will be the SUV’s, then bottled water.
Meanwhile we will still be building coal generators.
Anyone else agree?

Nuclear power plants create huge amounts of energy from very little fuel, and the waste they produce, while admittedly dangerous, is localized and easy to take care of. You have the spent uranium rods, but you basically just need to lock those up and bury those, and wait for the radioactivity to die. Chernobyl was an unusual disaster; they didn’t have any of the advanced safety systems we have today, and they overrode the automatic processes that were there.
We could even just clean up coal. Get rid of the carbon, mercury and other crap. It would work pretty well.
We could eliminate our dependence on petroleum if we took a hint from Brazil.
Solar power needs some time to mature, but if we just used more effective appliances it would work quite well. Same for wind.
Petroleum is just so outdated and dirty. Despite the username, I’m a strong supporter of the free market. I understand how economics come in to play, but money doesn’t mean much if the world’s underwater.

burning fossil fuels, such as coal, is contributing to global climate change, including dramatic changes in Canadian arctic. Should we consider using nuclear power as a “green” energy source for canada?
plz give me reasons why we shouldn’t use nuclear power as a green energy source for canada.
Thx!
